  Complementary Approaches for Cancer Care

At Sastun Center of Integrative Health Care, we use complementary medicine to complement, but not replace, conventional cancer therapies.

Counseling and Psychological Services
Psychological and social support greatly influence your ability to positively cope with life’s challenges.  Counseling can provide an opportunity to share your concerns within a supportive atmosphere where you can learn tools such as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy to help manage your outlook, emotions, and  any physical discomfort you might experience.

Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture
Acupuncture and Chinese herbs are powerful adjuncts for supporting your body during cancer care.  The Chinese medicine approach is to see you as an individual and your mind, body and spirit as a whole.  Pain, fatigue, fear, depression and a compromised immune system are common to those undergoing treatment.  There may be nausea with chemotherapy or pain at the site of radiation or surgery.  Chinese medicine can alleviate these side effects, boost your immune system and improve your general health and well being.

IV Infusion Therapies
Intravenous Vitamin C therapy in high doses, used in conjunction with chemotherapy or radiation has been shown to be beneficial to cancer patients. Some clinical trials have shown that high doses of Vitamin C are toxic to cancer cells and improve side effects from conventional therapy.  For patients seeking nutritional support while undergoing chemotherapy or radiation, the pro-oxidant property of Vitamin C aids in decreasing inflammation, improving immune response, tissue regeneration and repair in addition to an overall sense of well being and may improve quality of life.

Yoga
Yoga research has been shown to offer many benefits for people recovering from cancer.  Yoga classes and individual one on one sessions at Sastun Center are designed to meet the individual at any level of recovery and offer an experience which helps to create greater self-awareness, provide grounding, teach the connection to one’s own natural healing breath, teach energy  conservation as well as techniques to access the parasympathetic nervous system to enhance healing.  All classes are taught by a yoga teacher/therapist with experience teaching yoga to cancer survivors.

Naturopathic medicine
Naturopathic practitioners are specialists in natural health care who use natural, nontoxic therapies to support the whole person and encourage the self-healing process, with an emphasis on building health.  Naturopathic practitioners make recommendations of natural approaches to safely support your whole body, strengthen your immune system and boost your overall energy.  One of the main goals of naturopathic practitioners is to best endow you with the natural tools necessary to help you fight cancer.  At the Sastun Center, our patients receive a personalized nutrition, botanical,  supplementation and homeopathic plan designed to enhance the immune system.  These approaches will help reduce conventional treatment-related side effects, boost the immune system and enhance quality of life.

Massage and Bodywork
As relaxation is an important part of the healing process, massage can be a complementary therapy for people undergoing treatments for cancer.  Studies show that massage can relieve side effects such as nausea, pain, fatigue, and depression often associated with traditional treatments.  Although not a treatment for cancer, massage therapy appears to ease symptoms of the disease.  This therapy can also help patients cope with the side effects of treatment by promoting rest and relaxation.

Energy Healing
Energy Healing, a complementary modality to traditional treatment protocols, offers a variety of benefits to those undergoing chemotherapy and radiation.  In this individualized approach, the practitioner carefully evaluates the state of depletion of the physical body and lack of emotional/spiritual vibrancy by studying the energetic changes in the energy field of the patient. The purpose of the actual hands-on energy treatment is to activate the patient’s light matrix or inner light and re-create a well balanced resonant field, which has a harmonizing and vitalizing effect on body, mind and soul.  The process is gentle, yet powerful.  Clients describe the energetic shifts taking place as deeply relaxing, emotionally cleansing, renewing and peaceful.  They often feel like having reconnected with a healing source deep within.
