Family Nurse Practitioner
Toni joined the Sastun Center team in 2010 as an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner with an emphasis in family practice. She has been a Registered Nurse for fourteen years (a Family Nurse Practitioner for the past six years), with nine years of clinical experience in the emergency medicine, critical care, retail and family practice disciplines and five years in the healthcare software field. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, as well as a Master of Science degree in Healthcare Informatics in 2005, and Post Masters Certificate Nurse Practitioner degree in 2007 from the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City. She has also been trained in Applying Functional Medicine in Clinical Practice (AFMCP) through the Institute for Functional Medicine. Functional Medicine is personalized, patient-centered medicine that focuses on primary prevention and underlying causes rather than just symptoms.
Toni’s own journey to health and healing began in 2008 when she became very ill after having her second child and completing her first triathlon – simply wearing herself down – was stricken with flu-like symptoms, subsequent shingles, bronchitis, and horrible nausea. After three hospitalizations and a 35-pound weight loss, she was diagnosed with “idiopathic gastroparesis.” Essentially, her stomach was paralyzed. After conventional medicine could not help her, she decided to seek additional alternative therapies. It was ultimately the functional medicine approach that healed (cured!) her. Toni now is in tune with her mind, body, and spirit in a way that she never was before. She also discovered she is gluten intolerant and has had to learn since then a whole new way to cook/prepare food. Nutrition is a medicine and food is actually information for your cells. Toni believes there is a reason for everything and that her health crisis was not an accident. It has become her mission to help people achieve their own personal wellness goal.
A nurse practitioner is a registered nurse with additional specialized graduate education. Nurse practitioners provide medical aspects of care previously offered only by physicians. The nurse practitioner studies advanced nursing and selected medical studies in graduate school and has intensive clinical experience specific to their area of practice. Many nurse practitioners have doctoral degrees and are licensed to practice under the rules and regulations of the state in which they practice. In Kansas, the legal identification is as an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner through the Kansas State Board of Nursing. Nurse practitioners have the authority to order, perform and interpret diagnostic test such as labs and x-rays, diagnose and treat acute and chronic conditions, prescribe medications and treatments, counsel and teach patients.
